The Voyage

A 16th-Century Hacienda,
Ninety Minutes From Mexico City.

Construction began in 1529 on the orders of Hernán Cortés. First a Franciscan monastery, then the largest sugar mill in Mexico, later a barracks for Emiliano Zapata during the Revolution. Today Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas is a five-star estate set in palm groves, bamboo, and organic orchards in Amacuzac, Morelos, ninety minutes from Mexico City and forty from Cuernavaca.

Spanish barrel vaults and semicircular walls, more than six hundred pieces of art and antique furniture, twenty-one suites, a heated pool, a temazcal spa beside the waterfall, tennis and padel courts, and horseback rides through the grounds.

Amacuzac, Morelos.

Where the warm lowlands of Morelos meet the Sierra. Walled gardens, the Royal Palm causeway, the Amacuzac river nearby. Ninety minutes from Mexico City, forty from Cuernavaca. The address of one of Mexico's oldest haciendas.

Trip Experiences

What You'll Do.

Four nights inside a living piece of Mexican history. Vaulted halls, a temazcal at dusk, fire-cooked dinners, and the pueblos and ruins of Morelos at the door.

01 / Estate

The 1529 Hacienda

A private tour of the oldest corners of the property: the barrel-vaulted naves, the Red Room with the hacienda's oldest art, the 18th-century aqueduct and waterfall, and more than six hundred antiques collected across the estate. Five centuries, from Cortés to Zapata, under one roof.

02 / Wellness

Temazcal & Amate Spa

The pre-Hispanic sweat-lodge ceremony at dusk, led by a temazcalero, then massages and facials in the four master cabins of Amate Spa, set into the gardens of La Cascada. Steam, copal, river stones, and silence beside the waterfall.

03 / Table

La Troje & Private Chef

The hacienda's restaurant, La Troje, sets Mexican tradition against an avant-garde hand: mole, regional moles, and the day's market. Long lunches under the arches, fire-cooked dinners in the courtyard, mezcal and mariachi on the closing night.

04 / Grounds

Horseback & The Palm Causeway

Ride out through three sets of gardens, the edible forest and orchards, down the Royal Palm causeway in the cool of the morning. Or walk it with coffee. No experience required, horses are gentle and led.

05 / Leisure

Heated Pool, Tennis & Padel

The heated pool framed by sun terraces, tennis and padel courts in the gardens, a wine cellar for tastings, and the slow afternoons in between. Days at the hacienda are unhurried by design.

06 / Beyond

Tepoztlán & Xochicalco

The pueblo mágico of Tepoztlán, its cliffside pyramid and Sunday market, and the UNESCO ruins of Xochicalco, the Feathered Serpent pyramid above the valley. Two of Morelos's great day trips, both within an hour of the gate.

07 / Cellar

Wine Cellar & Mezcal

A guided tasting in the hacienda's cellar: Mexican wines from Guadalupe and Querétaro alongside small-batch mezcal and raicilla, poured with the chef's botanas. An easy hour before dinner, candle-lit and low.

08 / Sundown

Golden Hour Margaritas In The Gardens

As the light turns, a margarita cart rolls into the gardens: tommy's, tamarindo, mezcal-spiked, salt or tajín on the rim. Three hectares of palms and orchards going gold, music low, the best hour of the day.

09 / Night

Mezcal, Mariachi & Fire

The closing night in the courtyard: a fire lit, a long table laid, mezcal poured, a mariachi rounding the arches. Fire-cooked dishes from La Troje and the kind of dinner that runs late on purpose.
